How to get Kalimantan

Balikpapan, Tarakan and Pontianak have the International Airports. The flights are coming from Singapore and Malaysia such as Tawau, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. The Airport of Balikpapan, Samarinda and Berau are the main Airports in East Kalimantan. There are direct filghts from the main cities within Indonesia.

Palangkaraya Airport and Pangkalan Bun Airport are the main Airport in Central Kalimantan. There are coonections to major cities in Indonesia.

A Syamsudin Noor Airport in Banjarmasin is a regional airport located in South Kalimantan, has a good connection to major cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Makassar, Denpasar, Balikpapan, Pontianak etc.

There are three main harbors in Kalimantan. Those are Balikpapan harbor, Banjarmasin harbor and Pontianak harbor.
Balikpapan is a seaport city and a main harbor on the east cost of Kalimantan Island.

Banjarmasin harbor is located on the River of Barito and to be the main harbor in the south of Kalimantan and also gate away of South Kalimantan. It is connected to the main harbor both Kalimantan or main harbor in Indonesia.

Dwikora Harbor is the main harbor of Pontianak. It is located at the edge of Kapuas River in Pontianak central area. Its location is also near to Pontianak Mayor Office.

Nunukan harbor is the the Gate away of Indonesia in the north side of Kalimantan. It’s connected d ferry from and to Tawau in Serawak (Malaysian Borneo). See FERRY schedule.

Kuching to Pontianak

It takes 10 hrs – 420 km distance, connected between Kuching (Malaysian side) and Pontianak (Indonesian side) Entikong and Tebedu are the border town in the two between. There are a lot of bus going to Pontianak from Kuching (Malaysian Borneo)

The cost for the fare would vary, depending on your preferences. While if you want a more comfortable ride you can opt to get the Super Executive Class for a larger leg space. There are buses in the morning and in the evening. In evening, the journey from Pontianak usually starts around 9.00 PM, with all buses traveling in convoy, the journey is comfortable as drivers are driving moderately. Reaching the border check-points between 4.00 - 6.00 AM (with one or two rest stops in between) just as the checkpoints open their gate. The journey from checkpoints to Kuching is another 2 hours at moderate driving, reaching Kuching regional bus terminal at 7.00 - 9.00 AM (1 hour ahead of Western Indonesian Time).Buses from Kuching regional bus terminal to Pontianak leave on two schedules, Economy class leaves at 7.00 AM and 1 PM Malaysian Standard Time, while Super Executive class leaves at 11.00 AM Malaysian Standard Time.
