Mahakam river is Borneo’s central mountain range. Travelling by riverboat is an experience in itself. Navigate along the Mahakam is an ecological and cultural treasure trove. The river is almost 1.000 km long, and the only way to bring you into the deep interior of East Kalimantan. . It’s a journey that takes you into the living heart of Kalimantan.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with your English speaking guide, then transfer to Loa Janan by vehicle to embark the houseboat.
Welcome on board. Enjoy the adventure on mighty Mahakam river.
Lunch and dinner will be served on board. Take an overnight cruise through the waterways of Mahakam river.

💧 Samarinda Airport – Loa Janan (38 km) : 1,5 hours

💧 Loa janan – Muara muntai : 15 hours by boat

Today is a full day excursion with picnic lunch.

Start your day with a visit to Muara muntai village. Visiting the market to see it’s fresh produce.  After exploring the village and market, take a motor canoe through the water village of Jantur, Jempang lake then entering Ohong creek to explore rural Kalimantan. Here you'll pass locals washing, fishing and bathing while enjoying the shade of the lush green surroundings. You also will see the rain forest and its wildlife such as Proboscis monkeys, macaques, king fishers, lizards, snakes and any bird species.

Upon arrival at Mancong, the Dayak traditional ceremony welcomes you in front of their Long house. You may Join into the dance performance.

Mancong village is home to around 500 inhabitant of Dayak Benuaq.

Afterwards by motor canoe to Tanjung Isuy for sightseeing. Late afternoon transfer back to Muara muntai and getting on the Houseboat then imidiately proceed cruise up stream to Melak.

Dinner and overnight on board

Arrive Melak at the daybreak. After breakfast, a short drive will bring you to Kersik Luway Orchid Garden. Here, you have chance to see the blooming black orchid. After short treking in the park, proceed to Eheng, to see the old Long House. Home to arround a hundred of Dayak Tunjung.
Afterwards return back to Melak to catch up the house boat.

Lunch, Dinner and overnight on Board

  • Melak – Kersik Luway (15 km) : 30 minutes
  • Kersik Luway – Eheng (22 km) : 35 minutes
  • Eheng – Melak (32 km) : 45 minutes

Arrive at Tenggarong, visiting the former palace of Sultan Kutai Kartanegara, where you will see the Sultan's impressive collection of heirlooms, ceramics, Dayak's art and culture items. Afterwards back on house boat for lunch while cruising slowly towards Loa Janan. Disembark from the house boat, then take vehicle to Balikpapan or Samarinda Airport for your next destination.
